Change is Perpetual
Owning your own business is not easy but with
patience and a loving wife to help keep up with everything I make it. We own a
small cafeteria call DayDream Cafeteria. We make and prep all of the food
ourselves. We have a few people employed with us to help man the register and
prep meals. We serve both hot and cold options.
There are challenges to running a food business. As
easy as it may seem we have rules and regulations to uphold. Everything is
temperature checked and logged multiple times a day. All food prep and
packaging areas are well sanitized and we make sure to keep the sitting areas
sparkling. We are strict with our employees about excellent hygiene and consistence
of washing their hands between all tasks so there is no cross contamination.
Another thing we pride in is our customer service.
We want to keep the customers coming back. If any customer has an issue at all
my wife is a great manager and fixes the problem with such grace. She makes a
lasting impression on all she meets which is why I have her handle the
customers and I stay in the back and cook.
For every season we change our menu options so that
we don’t bore our customers with the same food all year long. It also helps
with our food costs. With the change of the seasons comes a change in available
local products. We do our best to purchase locally grown produce to help out
our local farmers and economy. During winter we do several soup options which
are available by the bowl or by the pint. We also have a bread bowl option. We
purchase the best sourdough bread bowls from a local mum and pop bakery not far
from our cafeteria. The potato soup and broccoli cheddar are a huge hit with
the bread bowls.
Our food rushes can go up or down and we do have
slow points at times but my wife is good at looking over the books and seeing
where we can cut back or what menu options we can cut to lower costs. She is
really the mastermind behind the whole operation. She makes all the right
decisions to make sure we won’t have to shut our doors.
There have been slow months when I felt like we
would have to shut everything down but my wife is there to hold my hand and
tell me we will make it. She supports me in my business dream. We want to one
day expand our DayDream cafeteria and do catering as well. My wife is still
working on all the business planning for our expansion. The catering is her
part of the dream. We both love to be in the kitchen and to see the customers
enjoying our culinary creations.
It’s not always easy, but it is always worth it. Our
little DayDream cafeteria is our livelihood. It may be a business but it is a
part of our family all the same.
